Germania, nine years after Christ is born, Domitius, a Roman legionary, fled the destruction of his legion to a better fighting position only to find that the barbarian ambush had wiped out his brothers.

A family moves into their first home filled with excitement about their new life on a farm.

Cleaning up, they discover a window masked to look like the rest of the exterior. They break the glass and  their eyes are locked on the 1950's décor: a cowboy lampshade and bedspread, metal toy cars and a cement truck, the closet with a few shirts and jeans ready for school and dust overall. No one had lived in this room for years.

Deep in the corner of the closet was the faint image of a child with his chin resting on his knees.

He jerked his head up and looked at the strangers looking into his room. A voice whispered, "Drive them away or we will destroy them."

1917, World War One

Father Leauvin, stands on the battlefield where miles of wretched barbed wire and landmines cover the field.

The bodies of dead horses are knotted wretches ... their fallen riders blown to pieces. Massive craters hold the remains of men blasted to death, and other men lay in the mud and filth shot while crossing no man's land.

Father's stomach turned so much that the butterflies were forced out at the sight of the horror.

He steadied his camera, made the sign of the cross, and then prayed. "For the dead." He sought to reconcile the loss of young lives for inches of dirt, but he found that the loss did not equal the gain.

His mind drifted away from the horror to a woman in Paris that his heart ached to be near, but he grasped his cross, looked the ground over, then pushed the feeling of her away. He was here for God and the suffering of men, not his personal interest.
